Fantastic flavor! Took all day to make, but worth every minute. I used a double pie crust instead.
04/04/2011
I used the filling and cooked it to its full length. Don't cut downwards on the time simmered and baked, considering as the water evaporates the season only becomes more robust. Modifications I fabricated: - Mash Potatoes in place of crust. More like a Shepherd's Pie. Information technology's also cheaper. About 3lbs of yellowish potatoes, boiled then mashed. four Tbshp of unsalted butter, 1/ii cup of heavy whipping cream. Salt and Pepper to taste. (I don't use a blender for potatoes because it changes the dynamic of the mash) Chunks are expert. -Doubled the recipe because I had a feeling this would exist a hit and for all the time you put in it, you might also have plenty of leftovers. - 2lbs of chuckeye with all the fat removed which probably fabricated information technology about ane 1/2lbs of meat. - Used one white onion, and so 2 shallots. - added about a 1lb of fresh cutting up green beans. - Baby Portabella Mushrooms in place of crimini and I added a fiddling more than what it called for. - Didn't add the sugar - subbed bay leaf for sage. - I also recollect you could add caraway seed or fennel seed, but didn't want to mess more than I did.

Since I didn't feel similar making pie crust, I made this every bit a stew instead (added potatoes). Wonderful! It was gobbled up by my guests before I could go another bowl.
03/18/2011
I loved the taste of this dish. I skipped the long stove-top cooking and instead put the mixture in the crock pot afterward thickening the first time. I cooked it on loftier for near an hour then turned it to low for another hr and a one-half. I and so put the mixture in the fridge util I wanted to make the pie.
03/18/2011
Important Notation: The recipe should state "dried thyme", NOT basis thyme (a completely different ingredient), which is why i call back some people accept found the thyme season overpowering- i think Allrecipes got confused, possibly our British and American wires got crossed! As other people take mentioned, as well every bit making this as a pie i often just eat it as a stew or casserole- information technology works brilliantly both ways! Information technology does take a while to cook i guess, simply the rich flavor you get at the end of it is so worth it!
03/25/2011
Very good and flavourful, however, I don't think yous need the last half hour of cooking. The vegetables (I added peas) in my filling turned mushy. Also I used half the puff pastry every bit a base chaff, and that shrank when I broiled it on its own. BUT I will definitely attempt it again, the ale gave it a fantastic flavour and normally I detest beer. Thanks!
03/22/2011
delicious, but the guinness flavor really develops every bit it sits - and so the season is a lot stronger if you lot eat it as leftovers the side by side day. i made it with ruth'southward grandma'southward pie crust from this site.
04/fifteen/2011
None of u.s. really cared for this 1. I guess I'm not a guinness fan. Pitiful.
03/17/2011
I made this for St. Patty's Solar day. My husband and I thought it was first-class. It certainly takes awhile to cook, only the filling is succulent. I used Guinness Extra Stout and was afraid it might make information technology a scrap bitter, simply the result was fantastic. Extras are already packed up for lunch tomorrow!
12/30/2012
This recipe is merely fantastic, the perfect traditional Steak and Ale Pie. I pretty much followed the recipe as written. I did triple all ingredients to make 2 ten 9.five" Deep Pies. I besides added 1/two loving cup of frozen pies to the vegetables. I cooked for the amount of time stated which produced a nice thick stew. I always brushed the top of the pastry with milk rather than the egg the recipe chosen for. This recipe really is a keeper for me.
03/12/2011
This pie was amazing! It isn't a quick meal however the end product is well worth it.
03/17/2015
This recipe was a winner, made it exactly every bit written, and it was a hit! The bacon and the beer make information technology so adept. I was so glad when the hours of work payed off, my husband loved it.
05/12/2012
Yummy!!!! similar the others said... " worth the wait"
03/17/2011
I made the recipe without changes. I thought the stout was too bitter in the pie. In the future, I would employ maybe 1/2 loving cup vs. 1 cup. Too, I think this would be better equally a stew without the puff pastry on top. Overall, a good recipe.
01/22/2016
I made this for my boyfriend and his friends to have between football games. Our house has been voted in for all time to come Super Bowls. The gravy got thick and rich and the meat tender. Portions seemed generous to me and I wasn't able to stop but none of the guys had this problem.
02/xv/2012
I fabricated this last evening and my husband and I thought it was delicious. I really used red wine instead of Guiness considering I did not have any in the firm. It made a practiced substitute. Other than that I followed the recipe to the letter. I made my ain puff pastry which was more than labor intensive, just well worth the effort.
01/08/2013
Over the weekend I happened to come beyond a dish like this in an Irish pub and come up Monday I was bound and determined to observe the recipe. Well, if this isn't it it's pretty close! I made the recipe exactly as is only making the pie in individual ramekins. Despite having to consume dinner at almost ten 30 at night, I absolutely loved this, and afterward travelling to iv dissimilar liquor stores looking for individually sold Guinness, I am sure glad I concluded upwards having to purchase a four pack because I cannot wait to brand this again!
01/xiii/2012
I am in love with this pie! Itakes a while to brand but it is fun and And then good! it is the perfect wintertime dish. super filling and warms you lot from head to toe!
ten/04/2016
Yum! I made the recipe almost as is, with the exception of using a bottom crust (which I wouldn't exercise over again since the crust come up out a chip mushy) and I baked information technology at 425 degrees which crisped upwards the puff pastry actually well. I volition definitely brand this again using the same baking temperature. Very good.
03/16/2012
Wow this was outstanding! I fabricated a few changes to the recipe... I left out the mushrooms and added celery and likewise used Shiner Bock beer instead of the Guinness since that is what I had on mitt!! I also doubled the puff pastry making an extra layer ... Even thought this takes a while to make it was definely worth it!! This volition become a staple meal in my house!!! Anybody went back for seconds!!!
12/15/2013
Delish. I doubled the filling for a deep dish pie plate. Likewise used a store bought double pie chaff, baking bottom crust before filling.
03/23/2016
Admittedly succulent! Anybody loved this dish. I used fresh thyme instead--a little more than the dried thyme called for since it's non as potent. Oddly enough I only had frozen phyllo dough on hand instead of puff pastry, just information technology made for a nice, light, flaky topping. This recipe does take all of the 3 hr cooking fourth dimension listed, but most of it is simmering and baking which don't keep you lot chained to the stove/oven.
04/25/2014
I used this recipe for a "steak pie" with puff pastry but for anyone who doesn't like the stoutnes/bitter flavour of beer or especially Guinness beer which most beer drinkers Honey ( I didn't use it because I dont similar beer..too bitter) but I DID use the exact same with Red vino instead! I merely inverse beer to vino and didnt have mushrooms merely added some baby potatoes cut small. Neat RESULTS! needed extra s&p for u.s.a. merely only adjusted to taste and It TURNED OUT GREAT! Yous tin really use filling w/small amount of gravy into iindividual puff pastry enclosed pies! Similar "jamacian paties" it is GREAT to do several things with this filling! Thank you for the post!
03/20/2017
Very good! Had concerns making this after reading the review from the person who did not like it due to the flavor of Guinness. Was non able to gustatory modality the Guinness at all and the gravy was very flavourful
03/08/2012
This is a bully dish. Information technology takes some fourth dimension to make and disappears really fast. I have fabricated it twice in 2 days and my only gripe is my crust non looking as good as the picture. Definitely a keeper.
03/21/2017
Made this into individual pies and took them camping ground. They reheated great over the fire and everyone loved them!
ten/xix/2016
I employ fresh thyme and added more carrots than the recipe called for This freezes very well. I tripled the recipe.
01/07/2013
This is first-class! The only alter I made in the recipe is to add in another carrot and adjacent time I'll add a third. Even though this takes "time" it doesn't need constant attention. Once it's in the pot on the stove, you really can walk away and let it melt with a stir in the heart. From there, into the pie plate, top with the puff pastry and into the oven. We had our salad course while this was on its last 10 minutes in the oven. Nosotros let it rest about 5-10 minutes before cutting into it. Information technology was nevertheless piping hot. The flavors in this are wonderful and complex, far more interesting and satisfying than a traditional 'beefiness stew' recipe provides. My guests were able to pick out the bacon flavor and also identified the Guiness accurately. I served this with a simple salad course, savory scones, and steamed white asparagus along side. Definitely worth your fourth dimension and skillful enough for visitor.
02/22/2013
Astonishing Pie and Amazing Season. My wife and I devoured this pie. Information technology is all about the low and slow cooking method. The Guinness fabricated an amazingly rich and thick sauce that worked perfectly. I added more mushrooms though and also added a few closer to the end to retain their shape and texture. I will be making this again and again!!!!
06/eleven/2014
This was a good recipe that I will use again but not a weel;y type recipe.
12/06/2014
Best beef pie ever. Made it like information technology said wasn't disappointed. My four twelvemonth old are information technology no complaints (big win). My wifes made fresh pie dough only difference .
06/16/2014
Not bad flavour. Found the filling a trivial dry out though.
02/18/2015
Wonderful! And so hearty, and the mushroom season actually comes through with the long cooking fourth dimension. And I loved the puff pastry on top - much lighter and more elegant than regular pie crust. This is a new favorite - well worth the time and try!
09/30/2013
Succulent! The Guinness gives it a uniquely rich and satisfying flavor. If y'all enjoy Guinness beer you will be delighted with this recipe. I used ground beefiness instead of stew meat out of necessity and it still came out tasting bang-up. I also used more corn starch than the recipe calls for in order to thicken the stew. Will definitely make this again.
03/28/2015
This was a very yummy dish. Especially since I am not fond of Guiness. Made information technology for a St. Patrick's day lunch at piece of work and everyone raved about it. Will definitely make this once again!
02/08/2014
Oh so GOOD! This is my hubby'southward favorit.. (I besides make it in the ho-hum cookery)
12/xxx/2012
Delicious! Used left over prime rib, so simmered the veggies until soft. & Made homemade crust. I volition use this recipe once again! Anybody loved it!
03/28/2015
I made this for St. Patrick's Day. It was delicious! I used ground beefiness instead of the cubed stew meat to reduce the cooking time. Other than that, I followed the recipe equally written. Very very adept! Thank you.
ten/18/2013
I love beef. I honey mushrooms. I dear Guinness. I did Non love this recipe.
09/07/2012
Splendid recipe! I used homemade pate brise for a crust, worked great. I also experimented with Gruyere and Havarti cheeses. I put a layer (nearly 1/4in thick slices) of cheese in the bottom of each pie beat before I put the filling in and broiled.(Havarti in i pie and Gruyere in the other) A-Mazing. my guests couldn't get enough!
01/xiii/2017
OMG! Loved this recipe!!! My grandparents are English and my grandmother made meat pie merely similar this! When she passed away xv years agone she left no recipe for it. This recipe took me back I had been craving her meat pie for ages and now I can make it!!!
x/24/2018
OMG This was sooo amazing. I had 5 teenage boys to feed. I made enough for 2 pans, and used puff pastry over i and Mashed Potatoes with Boursin over the other. I used Bisto gravy thickener instead of Corn Starch becuase that's what I had. Besides I couldn't find cremini at the store, so used bella mushrooms, possibly they are the same? Non sure. And whenever a recipe calls for a sure number of slices of salary - I read that equally one pound - and trim the fattiest bits away. The house smelled wonderful and the boys were all looking for leftovers afterwards. I would make this every weekend if I could. I may have added Worcestershire sauce too considering it seemed like the right thing to do.
01/20/2019
I pretty much followed the recipe. My pastry was probably "Aged" in the freezer, so not the best consequence. The filling was tasty. I recycled the filling on solar day ii and made a great beefiness barley soup.
03/21/2017
I fabricated this recipe, and when I did I inverse it in the following means I used three cups of Guinness which I reduced downwards to one loving cup for a more powerful Guinness flavor. To starting time the extra bitterness of the Guinness reduction and to add a more velvety texture to the Stew, I melted in iv tablespoons of butter straight earlier filling the puff pastry. I actually enjoyed this recipe!
04/23/2017
Embarrassed to say that this my outset AR review despite using hundreds of these recipes. 2nd time making this. First time was made exactly equally listed and while most loved it, wife thought information technology had a bitter taste.
02/14/2020
This is one of my favorite become-to recipes. Sometimes I make it ahead to bake just earlier serving it, sometimes I make i and freeze portions for lunches. ALWAYS it is a big hit with people. I like to use fresh thyme, just other than that, I modify nil. ????
01/22/2019
I never made any changes. This was delicious. Took my near 4hrs, but worth every minute.
04/14/2021
I have fabricated this recipe MANY, MANY times and no i ever complains about information technology, they just desire the recipe! A few "musts": practice NOT substitute other alcohol such as red wine or beer, you MUST use Guiness Stout or Extra Stout as that is where the bodily signature flavor comes from. Don't even bother to rate this recipe if yous don't employ Guiness, you didn't make THIS recipe. I much prefer the puff pastry crust but in a compression you tin can employ a ONE crust pie chaff recipe or store bought refrigerated pie crust. Some of the reviewers said they made information technology as a stew, and it does make a expert i! But practise NOT mess with the seasonings or the recipe otherwise, and if y'all tin can get it fresh thyme is preferable to stale thyme LEAVES, not "ground" thyme which is awful and overpowering. And don't skim on the bacon!
03/xv/2017
Since I had everything on manus simply the puff pastry, I made this into a stew. Other than that the just changes I fabricated was to employ elk instead of beefiness and I added potatoes in the terminal one-half 60 minutes. Very good and a perfect dinner for a cold dreary mean solar day.
xi/20/2019
followed virtually to the "T". simply thing I changed was 2 blocks of beefiness base and more starch. came out robust and delicious. I used to make this at a British pub I ran for years and couldnt recall the recipe.
10/08/2013
Rejected by both my husband and daughter, both strongly disliked the thyme seasoning, and that was after I used less than half of what the recipe called for. I think information technology would be quite excellent if I left out the thyme.
06/28/2020
Excellent. The only matter I did different was adjust the recipe to cook in my instant pot -25 min, high pressure then End with the puff pastry in the oven. It was and so adept the ii of us ate the whole matter in one sitting.
08/26/2019
You exercise have to make sure that you do utilize a dark beer equally it is described or it's non going to come out as well as you would want it to. Equally far as using a coke that is for the next time to effort.
11/08/2015
O-M-G!!! This was soooo good!!! I followed the recipe exactly except added one more piece of bacon. My boyfriend couldn't stop raving about it and leaned over the table to requite me a hug after he finished his plate!
03/24/2017
This was a picayune fourth dimension consuming, just and then , then worth it. The flavors were wonderful. I added a picayune more vegetables and used a regular pie crust for the summit. I likewise added shredded Irish cheese on the chaff. Will most definitely brand over again!
03/nineteen/2019
This was a expert dish, although I'grand not certain the corporeality of time required is worth it. Cooking the filling in a crock pot makes some sense, then I might try that next time. Nonetheless, I'll probably salvage this for special occasions (like St. Patrick'south Solar day). If you have the fourth dimension, go for it.
01/20/2018
This pie made my entire family bound for joy. It was the perfect warm end to a relaxing twenty-four hours. If o were to make a suggestion, I would add together common salt and pepper to the beef as information technology's browning for more tenderness and to b4ing out the flavors of the other ingredients. Merely other than that information technology is the perfect recipe!
10/04/2015
This takes a while to fix but it's worth every second. I used a chuck roast that I cubed instead of stew beef, and it's and so much better than the stew beefiness you lot get at the grocery shop.
11/09/2017
Omg!! This turned out and so succulent!! My family LOVED it!! I had a bunch of mushrooms, and leftover prime number rib, so I used more mushrooms and so the prime rib. Didn't need to cook it as long on the stove top. I'k going to make this every fourth dimension we have leftover prime rib!!
06/22/2016
What a fantastic pie. The only thing I did differently (because I had the girls coming round for dinner on a weeknight and wouldn't have been able to become domicile from work in time to cook it all) was I popped all the filling stuff in the slow cooker this morning. And then when I got home all I had to do was thicken it, make full the pie crust and bake. Delicious! And definitely hitting repeat on this one.
04/24/2021
I idea this was a great recipe! I did add a fiddling salt and pepper. I establish that it worked best in an 8x8 pan nice that fit the puff pastry perfectly.
09/04/2019
I added cubed potatoes that I boiled separately. I wanted a more hearty meal.
03/18/2018
yummy!
02/15/2018
SO GOOD. Takes a while to make only and then worth it. I could eat this every day.
03/xviii/2019
Superb
x/21/2020
Loved this recipe! Volition definitely go a staple fall dish in our house!
03/15/2013
Swell recipe! Cook time is a little off so employ best sentence. Read all the comments and modify based on your preferences. I used a stale mushroom medley that turned out well. Might exist cook with pie crust top besides.
04/20/2017
Very rich. Used sirloin for the meat.
01/xiv/2020
Full of season
03/02/2020
takes a while to cook just then awesome
11/07/2015
This is delicious and it looks wonderful besides. Except for using thyme leaves instead of footing thyme, I followed the recipe. I fabricated two pies for my husband's birthday luncheon. He declared it "and so, so good" and people asked for the recipe. This is like the beefiness and onion pie served at the celebrated Olde Affections Inn in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
x/02/2015
Turned out exactly like the beefiness pie I had this by summertime in England. Loved it there & only knew I had to make the identical at home. My husband is not a fan of night beers such every bit Guinness & he loved it!
04/08/2016
We made this for St. Paddy's Day--my little ones don't like cabbage or the saltiness of corned beefiness, so we were looking for something new. This was Awesome. I was a little worried that the Guinness season would exist also bitter for a three-year-old and a five-year-one-time, but they scarfed up every bite. Similar other reviewers, I used a double pie crust. Side by side time I may try doing the filling in a dull cooker before thickening it with corn starch and blistering it in the crust; the but trouble with this recipe is that it takes forever. Nosotros're making this every St. Patrick's Day from at present on!
09/09/2017
Succulent recipe! We added a purse of frozen peas as a substitute for mushrooms and marinated the beef to make in more tender.
12/17/2012
Perfect in every manner. I would not change a thing.
06/17/2018
It's and so worth the wait. Made multiple times. Over time, the only change I've made was to add celery & a little jalapeƱo.
02/10/2018
For the beef pot pie lover this recipe is perfect. I have to force myself not to eat the whole affair. I doubled upward on the top crust as per one suggestion and yep, even better
05/02/2022
I did add together peas and doubled this . One pie with top & lesser crust real pie.
2d pie only top crust , much more sauce without bottom crust. duh
The family loved information technology both ways.
02/19/2021
Corrupt. If you don't desire your eyeballs rolling back into your head so terminate now and don't brand this. I've made it a few times at present. First time I couldn't detect puff pastry so sub'd phyllo and information technology was swell, but puff pastry wins. Very straightforward with simple ingredients... don't exist intimidated by the time information technology's mostly the ho-hum cook. That said the scent for hours tin can exist torturous for hungry minions so have apps handy. For something and then delicious information technology's really difficult to mess up. I portion and freeze stew meat when it's on sale just for this dish. Looking for to making information technology with lamb or venison next time.
12/22/2020
Delicious and perfect blend of seasonings.
11/xviii/2017
Awesome.
03/17/2016
And so good, my husband and I loved every bite! Only change I made was to add i parsnip cut like matchsticks. Definitely will make over again.
04/20/2021
Great recipe. A little time consuming merely well worth it. Wonderful flavors
